Construction activity holds steady in October

Sri Lanka’s construction sector maintained strong momentum in October, with activity expanding sharply on the back of renewed project flows, the latest data from the Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) showed.

The Construction PMI’s Total Activity Index climbed to 64.3 in October, sustaining the upbeat trajectory seen in the previous month and signalling a robust rebound in sector activity.

A reading above 50.0 indicates an expansion compared to the previous month.

Survey respondents pointed to a notable pickup in government-funded projects, which fuelled the expansion in New Orders during the month. Firms also stepped up hiring and purchasing, with both the Employment and Quantity of Purchases indices showing growth, reflecting improved confidence and a steadier stream of work.

Despite the stronger activity, Suppliers’ Delivery Time remained lengthened, underscoring persistent supply-side bottlenecks that continue to challenge the pace of project execution.

Looking ahead, sentiment remains largely optimistic. Most firms expect the positive momentum to carry through the next quarter, supported by an anticipated continuation of the current project pipeline.
